TOWN OF CHENANGO ? New York State Police at Binghamton are continuing their investigation into the suicide of a Maryland man, who shot himself while fleeing police Sunday morning, Capt. Eric Janis said.
Sina Bounsiyavong, 53, was a suspect in a murder case in Silver Spring, Md. New York State Police received a tip from police in Montgomery County, Md., that Bounsiyavong would be traveling to the Binghamton area to see relatives, Janis said. Troopers spotted Bounsiyavong's 1993 Toyota minivan at 9:45 Sunday morning along Interstate 81 in Kirkwood. After Bounsiyavong refused to stop, police began a 12-minute chase that spanned 16 miles and reached 90 mph, police said. Police closed I-81 at exit 6 and re-opened it at 1:45 p.m., Janis said.
After police deflated the tires on Bounsiyavong's van, the van struck a guardrail and stopped in the passing lane of I-81 near exit 6 in the Town of Chenango, police said. As police approached the van, Bounsiyavong fatally shot himself once in the head, police said.
Montgomery County police suspected Bounsiyavong in the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Manivone Thavonesiri, who was killed during a house party in Silver Spring, Md., early Sunday.
Witnesses told Montgomery County police that Bounsiyavong, with whom Thavonesiri lived, left the party at 1 a.m., but returned around 5 to take Thavonesiri home. When Thavonesiri refused, Bounsiyavong shot her multiple times and left the party, police said. Police said Bounsiyavong and Thavonesiri had a 1-year-old child together, but had not established if the two were married or dating.
Bounsiyavong was taken to Wilson Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said. An autopsy confirmed the single gunshot wound killed Bounsiyavong, police said.
Silver Spring, Md., a suburb of Washington, is about 300 miles from the Town of Chenango.
